WMU appeared every weekday in the Arizona State University State Press newspaper from 1/2002 to 12/2005

I'll be honest with you: I haven't updated this site in a while because I've been busy, and I feel horrible about it. If you're visiting this site, then you are a WMU fan and I'm sorry I haven't kept you informed.

So... for the time being, I've been updating my MySpace page and my MySpace blog relatively regularly, so that's probably the best place for WMU news.

Also, I just printed up a new Fish comic book. It's 24 pages of Fish-tastic action, and there are more on the way. There are details on my MySpace page about how to get one.

Peace,

JOE

*Well, I'm finally back (apologies for the delay). I'll never be gone that long again, and that's a promise. Interestingly enough, I have a few pieces of news to report.
(1) There's a new (small) WMU-related project in the works, and soon I will have more information on that.
(2) If you have the new Aqua Teen Hunger Force Volume 4 dvd, you can find this drawing of mine in the "Special Features" menu under "F-art" (fan art). It can be seen around the nine-minute mark in the slideshow. I honestly don't know how it got in the hands of the Aqua Teen people. Plus, someone added a lame background to it. I am under the impression that someone may have been trying to pass this drawing off as their own. Scandalous! The image used to show up on the first page of Google image search for "aqua teen hunger force," and i got a lot of hits thanks to that. Weird.
(3) I am currently unemployed... yeah.......

*Well, it's over. The last WMU comic ran in the State Press today (with the exception of a goofy one that will run on Wednesday). Numbers-wise, it's been 4 years and approximately 600 individual comics.

*It's been a really fun time. That's the best way I can sum it up. Writing and drawing 5 comics per week never even resembled work. In a school with like 800,000 people (isn't it something like that now?), I think drawing a daily newspaper comic really gave me an identity and it truly helped me feel like I had a place at ASU.

*If you consider yourself a fan of WMU, I dedicate this series to you. If no one liked this comic, there would have been absolutely no reason to keep doing it. Comments from readers (be they positive or negative) made the whole deal worthwhile. It floored me when I started this website and a very nice girl actually linked to it from her blog!!! I had an internship over the summer and one of the dudes I worked with was a fan! People actually bought my t-shirts! Some people told me the only reason they read the State Press is for WMU. Thank you all so much. I am truly unable to describe in words how much your support meant to me.

*Any of the people who joined my deceased fan club, you guys totally rock. Any of the people who joined my friends list on MySpace purely because they liked the comic... you guys totally rock. Anyone who ever posted in the guestbook, you guys totally rock.

*Also, big thanks to my family, my friends, my brother, my girlfriend (who greatly influenced my original application to the State Press), my girlfriend's family, and anyone who ever had a kind word for me or the comic. Oh, yeah... and Ross.

*It's been a true honor to work alongside Guray Alsac, Tony Carrillo, Alexander Karlsson, Shaun Capeheart, Carson Mell, Joey Porter, and the dude who drew Bill the Onion (I hope I didn't forget anyone). All of them did awesome jobs and I would truly consider myself a fan of each of them. I read every student comic every day and I was always impressed.

*I will be at the graduation ceremony for the W.P. Carey School of Business next week (listen for my name!), and then my time at ASU is over. In January I start at my nice little office job. Working during the day and bettering my drawing during the night. Sounds like a decent life.

*But, you may ask, what becomes of this website? That's a good question. I'm definitely going to keep up with it. I may start an entirely new web-comic, or I may take the WMU characters in an all-new direction. As of right now I'm still counting my options. If you'd like updates through email, you will hear about big changes first.

See you soon.

December 2, 2005
*Comics from the past week are up, as usual.
*Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was a movie not seen by many people, but it was totally cool. I highly recommend it.
*I had two killer tests this week (Finance and International Business). To anyone who endured these tests as well, you deserve a pat on the back. Good show! I studied long and hard (ha ha), but I doubt I did my grade any favors. Oh well...
*As you may have guessed from the new graphic above, I am graduating this semester. This means that the last WMU comic will run this Tuesday, December 6th.
*I have many conflicting thoughts about the whole end of school thing, so check back on Tuesday for a long, rambling, over-emotional post from the J-man, as well as a status report on what will be happening with this website in the future, and how to stay involved with WMU.

November 25, 2005
*I guess "Happy Thanksgiving" is in order.
*Anyway, the comics for the past week are up and most all of the comics now have my commentary (with some of the comments more exciting than others).
*Just Friends was really dumb, but pretty funny. Rent was annoying. I enjoyed Walk the Line, and I have yet to see this Harry Potter film that everyone's talking about.
*Very few WMU comics left. Time to wind things up.
-joe
November 19, 2005
*All the comics for the past week are up! Yay!

*And what the heck is up with this guy?

*Have a nice week!
-joe
November 14, 2005
*See? Everything works out in the end.
-joe
November 11, 2005
*It's Veterans' Day.
*I put up all the comics for last week.
*I just heard that Arrested Development is going on hiatus. This saddens me.
-joe
November 7, 2005
*I noticed a few more hits than usual in the past couple days. To any new people, WELCOME! :)
*I'd like to stress once again that the comics for this week are flashbacks. Suppose Fish's life on Earth were flashing before his eyes... this is the stuff he might see. Now, these are still new comics, but I drew them in my old style, so the look different than most of the stuff from this semester. Next week will bring with it the resolution of the "Fish Gets Stabbed" storyline. Stay tuned, so to speak.
*The semester is winding up. That sucks.
*The Weatherman was enjoyable.

November 4, 2005
*You will have to stay tuned to the State Press to find out whether Fish lives or dies. Killed by his worst enemies? How ironic. On a similar note, all the comics for the past week are up, so you can relive Fish's supposed death as many times as you wish.
*Also, I guess I should tell you that Fish's condition is not directly addressed next week. Next week is comprised of "flash-backs" (new comics that I have drawn in my old style) that are intended to give a little more substance to all the emotions that the WMU crew may feel now that Fish's life is in serious jeopardy.
*In other news, Jarhead is a very entertaining movie, and Chicken Little is strictly for children.
-JOE
November 3, 2005
*Probably the most dramatic moment in WMU history occurred in the comic today. I'll have the comics for the week up on Friday, but check out the State Press website if you can't wait.

October 30, 2005 (part 2)
*Comics have been updated for your pleasure.
*This coming week is quite odd and has changed shape and scope many times in my head before being committed to paper. Hope you will enjoy it.
*More to come. -joe
October 30, 2005
*I promise a full and proper update later today (Sunday). PROMISE!
*Also, it must be said that Saw 2 was incredibly weak. I have never been so close to walking out on a movie. Capote wasn't bad and Philip Seymour Hoffman is quite good in it..
-joe
October 25, 2005
* I made the column of text skinnier!.... I'm so lame.
-joe
October 23, 2005
*A preview of the upcoming weeks...
Oh yes, there will be blood.
-joe

October 21, 2005
*The rest of the comics for the previous week are up. Peace.

October 18, 2005
*Humor me, please. This entire post has nothing to do with W.M.U., and I'm simply using it to put off my International Business extra credit assignment. I should actually be concentrating on it because I'm doing poorly in the class and I dearly need to do well so I can graduate in December. Sigh.
*Am I the only one who thinks Curb Your Enthusiasm is very over-rated? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the show, but I just don't think it warrants the insane hype. Best sitcom on TV? No way. That honor goes to Arrested Development, whose third season is currently rocking hard.
*However, Extras definitely deserves any hype that may come its way. The recent Samuel Jackson episode was classic and I'm eagerly awaiting the next (and last) two episodes.
*The new Strokes song ("Juice Box") is currently being played very rarely on radio stations and it rocks. But... why the hell do you release a single for an album that doesn't come out for 3 months?!?
*Back to work now.
-joe

October 16, 2005
*Finished up the commentary on all the posted comics.
*FYI: Good Night and Good Luck was a very enjoyable movie. I would recommend it.
-joe
October 14, 2005
*Added the rest of the comics for the previous week. Hope to change the look of the site a bit this weekend.
*For the record: The film Domino is a decent way to spend 2 hours, but it is ultimately pointless and forgettable, and Elizabethtown is very entertaining despite Orlando Bloom's and Kirsten Dunst's occasional bad acting (and sporadic feeling of Garden State deja vu). Wallace and Gromit is totally rad.

October 8, 2005

A handful of new comics are up, and I took a big stab at the commentary for the current semester. Check it out.

I feel I must also take a moment to recommend the following entertainment products that have enjoyed recently: Serenity is a rad movie and Firefly (the TV show it was based upon) is awesome. Also, the new Death Cab for Cutie album is delicious (but not quite as delicious as the previous one). The Weezer show last week at America West Arena was amazing and the Green Day show the next week was equally radical (but does Billie Joe really need to drag out every song to about 10 minutes?). The show Extras on HBO is cool because Ricky Gervais is incapable of being unfunny. Ali G rocks (especially Borat). The Scott Pilgrim comic series by Bryan O'Malley shall rule forever.

That's all I have for you right now. :)

Took me a while, but I finally updated the comics page. I promise not to be a away this long again, and I mean it.

September 17, 2005
FINALLY a proper update to the ol' website. Many comics have been uploaded. In addition, I have drastically lowered prices in the WMU store. Pick up a shirt for nearly half price! You cannot beat this deal. Of course, I only have Large and X-large sizes left.
That's all for now. Good luck at school.
Peace,

A new header. A few more posted comics. Some added images. That's what I've been up to. More to come.

September 3, 2005

Check this out. You may be surprised.

Anyway, we have plunged head-first into the new semester. Like it or not, this is the FINAL season of WMU. In December, I am graduating and going into the real world, which means I will be winding up the whole WM-Universe once and for all. Those who pay attention this semester will be (slightly) rewarded, since this set of strips adds up to an entire cohesive storyline. Since I hate loose ends, I have a nice little ending planned for the series, which will hopefully be satisfying to those of you enjoy the comic.

Personally, I'm excited because this coming week marks the long-awaited return of Alex Karlsson's "Ship of Fools" to the State Press comics page. He has been missed.

Tomorrow I'm re-doing this front page and probably adding more content. Peace!... oh yeah, and hit me up at Myspace.

I just want to say that I used Paint Shop to do the lettering for next week's comics and it was a pain in the ass. However, the comics are slightly above average in turns of weird-ness, so I guess you take the good with the bad.

If you are a fan of WMU (and a registered MySpace fanatic), then you should visit HERE and add yourself to my meager Friends List. It's totally the cool thing to do.

Just finished the first the first week of comics for the new semester (starting Monday!!!).
By the way, the final semester of WMU is dedicated to my grandmother, Catherine "Kay" Bowen (1925 - 2005). Her love of Peanuts and Calvin & Hobbes helped shape my young mind into the comics-obsessed adult I've become. She meant a great deal to many people, and she will be missed.

Wow. It's been 3 months. I'm surprised I still know how to use Dreamweaver.
Anyway, coming soon is the final season of WMU. I picked up the ol' pencil the other day for the first time in a long while. It feels good to be back in the saddle.
Stay tuned.

Here's a Fish wallpaper I drew up (1024x768). Wallpaper #1
And here is a preview of what it looks like:
Eventually I'll create a "downloads" section, and all the eventual wallpapers will go in there.
